Which Is Better for you?
Read more – before circumcision.
Circumcision entails the process of surgically removing the foreskin covering the tip of the penis also known as the prepuce. In most parts of the world, circumcision is a practice embedded in the cultural and religious setting.
In Jewish and Muslim religion, circumcision is done to newborns less than two weeks old. And whether it’s done to an adult, teenagers, or infant, the process has significant medical advantages. Ranging from balanitis, Phimosis, balanoposthitis, to paraphimosis, the procedure helps to solve a whole wide range of medical conditions.
However, while circumcision is important, the procedure can be dangerous if not done right. In extreme cases, it may result in hemorrhage, hematoma, and even death—not the nicest facts to know.
In this regard, let’s take an in-depth dive into different circumcision methods and examine which of them is better for you and your loved one.
Circumcision Method - Open Surgery
Open surgery encapsulates traditional or conventional or old circumcision methods, and the most common is referred to as Dorsal Slit Technique. In the procedure, a doctor extracts a specific amount of foreskin on the tip of the corona using scissors.
Then they stitch back the foreskin cut using 4-0 and 5-0 absorbable suture. Doctors then apply petroleum jelly on the stitched part and dress it with sterile gauze to prevent it from getting infections.
Other circumcision methods used in open surgery include the sleeve and the quillotine procedures.
Notably, circumcision methods under this category are complex and if not done right, they may result in complications such as:
- Hemorrhage (excessive bleeding)
- Pain
- Long recovery periods
- Wound infection
- Hemorrhage
- Hematoma
- Swelling and soreness
- Irritation on penis head
Circumcision Method - Laser Circumcision
This is a process that entails the removal of foreskin of the penis by the use of a minimally invasive procedure, which reduces bleeding and facilitate faster healing. And as the name suggests, doctors achieve the aforementioned process by the use of a high-intensity laser beam.
The process is far much safer than the conventional methods as the laser doesn’t affect the neighboring tissues. Patients can go home on the same day and healing take between 2 and 3 days.
More importantly, the process is done under 30 minutes and the surgeon has to administer local or spinal anesthesia before the patient is taken for the pre-surgery medical tests. If the conventional anesthesia is administered, the patient has to stay in the hospital for at least 3-5 hours for observation.
In this circumcision method, the incisions are usually small and some of the benefits include but not limited to:
- A short recovery period of about 2-3 days
- Fast procedure of about 10-15 minutes
- Painless procedure
- No blood loss
- No hematoma
- Doesn’t affect the neighboring tissues
- Less swelling
- Same-day discharge
- Minimal risks of wound infection
- No pain during sexual intercourse
- Permanent solution
- 100% success rate
- Daily dressing is not necessary
Circumcision Method - ZSR Circumcision
ZSR circumcision method is a minimally invasive circumcision method, which employs a stapler-like device to make the incision and seal the edges of the skin. Unlike the conventional methods, this technique makes only small incisions, doesn’t interfere with the neighboring tissues, and there is no bleeding.
The circumcision method is completely painless as the doctors administer local anesthesia before the procedure. With same-day discharge, patients can rejoin their families quickly. After the procedure, patients are advised to refrain from sexual activities or masturbation.
Patients who use the procedure take between 2-3 days to recover and focus on other money generating activities without much inconvenience.
Benefits include:
- Small incision
- No blood loss
- Painless procedure
- Same-day discharge
- Lower chances of wound infection
- No post-operation complications
- A permanent solution
- The perfect remedy for balanitis, Phimosis, balanoposthitis, and paraphimosis
- Fast procedure
Which Method is Better?
While both ZSR and laser circumcision methods come with a myriad of benefits, the former procedure is cost-effective as compared to the latter. More importantly, finding hospitals that offer laser technology can be a daunting undertaking in Malaysia. Research shows that the ZSR circumcision method is just as good as the laser circumcision method with the only difference being the mode of technique used in the surgery.
As compared to traditional circumcision methods, ZSR has helped to eliminate the problems associated with Dorsal Slit Technique. With the use of technology, hemorrhage, pain, swelling, and other conditions associated with the conventional methods are now a thing of the past.
More importantly, quick recovery periods allow patients to go on with their lives conveniently.
Before you Leave
Statistics show that over 20 million circumcision procedures in North America and the Middle East are done through the ZSR technique. It helps to keep penile cancer at bay and other health conditions associated with the foreskin. Even better, it’s painless.
As Malaysian muslim children normally circumcision is performed around age 5-12 (common).
